Iraqi government welcomes Shiite cleric Sadr’s withdrawal of his fighters from embattled Basra streets

Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr Sunday, March 30, ordered his Mehdi Army militiamen off the streets of Basra and other Shiite cities, demanding that the forces led by prime minister Nouri Maliki end their crackdown on his and other militias in Basra and grant those in custody an amnesty. The government spokesman in Baghdad welcomed the offer.

Al-Dabbagh said the move would “help the government confront those who are violating the law” and that it would help to “isolate those who are trying to destroy the government effort”.

He said Iraqi security operations in Basra would not end until the “criminal elements” operating there are removed.

Clashes in Basra and Baghdad have been going on between Shia militia and the Iraq police, backed up by the US and British military.

The battles were prompted by a crackdown on the militias in the southern city.

Sadr offered to stop the fighting in return for an amnesty and an end to the clampdown on his followers.

A U.S. warplane strafed snipers in the southern city of Basra, killing at least 16 suspected militants after Iraqi troops came under heavy fire, the American military said.

An AC-130 gunship then opened fire on enemy positions on three roofs.

Iraqi Forces Focus Operations on Criminal Activity in Basra

Iraqi security forces are focused on reducing criminal activity in Basra, Iraq, Multinational Force Iraq’s deputy chief of staff for strategic effects said today during a conference call from Baghdad with military analysts.

“In Basra, as you know, Iraqi security forces have undertaken operations specifically to improve the rule of law,” said Army Maj. Gen. Kevin Bergner. “They have been conducting operations in Basra now for about four days.”

A U.S. helicopter fired a Hellfire missile during fighting in a Shiite militia stronghold of Baghdad on Friday, while U.S. pilots conducted their first airstrikes on the southern city of Basra to aid Iraqi forces battling powerful Shiite militias.

Ground forces called for the airstrike in Sadr City after coming under small-arms fire while clearing a main supply route before dawn, U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Steve Stover said.

North Korea provokes US with missile test

North Korea has let off a salvo of test missiles, issuing a defiant response to American demands for action over nuclear decommissioning and to a new conservative government in the South.

The launch of three, perhaps four, ship-to-ship missiles was confirmed by a South Korean presidential spokesman, who said they were part of routine military exercises.
