Iraqi, Coalition forces engage al-Qaeda in Ameriyah

CAMP LIBERTY — Iraqi security forces and Coalition Soldiers conducted operations against extremists in the western Baghdad district of Ameriyah May 30 to June 1.

“In the past several days we have been involved in operations with the Iraqi Army and local nationals against al-Qaeda in Ameriyah,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Dale Kuehl, commander of 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment.

Local residents provided intelligence to 1-5th Cav. Soldiers on a bomb-making cell in the area, which led to a large weapons cache being discovered and two suspected al-Qaeda fighters detained, Kuehl said.
